Ryan Grim, newsroom veteran turned media founder

"there's a feeling that everybody gets when a story is starting to get kind of uncomfortable, like a little too close to the bone"
2

joined me and for a live Substack all-hands event a few weeks ago.

Ryan is a legendary D.C. reporter, a bestselling author, the former leader of the Washington bureaus for The Intercept and HuffPost. Most recently he has launched Drop Site News with Jeremy Scahill, which is an already tremendously successful Substack.

We cover a lot of ground in twenty minutes.

  • Journalism, and that “feeling that everybody gets when a story is starting to get kind of uncomfortable, like a little too close to the bone.”

  • Transitioning from a newsroom environment to being a media founder

  • Why people at Dropsite News also have personal Substacks, and how they’re turning that into an advantage

Unfortunately while Ryan and Hamish look and sound great, I somehow managed to lose my own audio and video from the original recording. (Last time I use Riverside..)

There was enough great material that I wanted to still get the episode out, so I’ve had to cut out a few parts that had a lot of back-and-forth with me — an improvement, if anything — and re-recorded a couple of my own questions. Any editing-related awkwardness is my fault alone.

Thanks

as always for the music.
