Always enjoy listening to you both!

Chris, are you getting the side by side video through editing in post? Would definitely prefer that format for my lives/recordings.

This is coming soon as an automatic option (we’re still working out the kinks.)

Hamish's note this week was excellent. Probably slightly better worded than Luigi's.

Platforms removed his content very quickly. Goodreads was criticised for not taking down a book review that he wrote.

Paternalism at its worst.

Name checking several high profile people at the beginning of your post is naff, and rude to everyone else paying attention to your live feeds.

Are we grading manifestos now? The first part of the discussion was so odd. He didn't write a manifesto, it was basically his confession and his organisational rationale. Police and media seem to have labelled it a manifesto, which you didn't correct even though you apparently read it for yourself.

Delay, Deny, Defend, is the name of a book, so he didn't come up with that himself for his ammo engravings.

One thing I’m curious about is what you would have done if he had a paid account. I think there are legalities at play, there. Not sure if you have a policy.

He's not been found guilty of anything yet. Other platforms close accounts down for their own reasons, not because there's a legal requirement to cut off revenue streams for an accused person (whether charged with anything or not).

Some states have laws against people profiting from criminal activity. I don’t know enough to know when those apply or how in this situation.

Expand full comment

We have the same laws in Australia. Being charged cones with an assumption of innocence. Many charged people get bail and continue working and earning an income. The law can't be applied until someone has been found guilty.

Expand full comment

Is it specifically for “can’t profit from activity relating to a crime” or “can’t work?” The laws as I understand them were more against selling a memoir about the murder for instance.

Yeeeeesss. Let's stick with your speculative scenario: if he had a paid Substack, writing about computer coding, or writing about managing chronic pain, for example ... how would that be profiting from his alleged crrime (and the law doesn't kick in with mere allegation)?

Because what you're suggesting is that all sources of income should be cut off when someone is charged.

Nope. I just wanted to know how they would handle it.

I wish there was a transcript of this video.

Hi! On web you have a side by side transcript available that can be activated in the video player controls bar. And you also have a button underneath the title to open the transcript as the post content.

Chris, I always learn something from your livestreams. Great conversation with Hamish about the implications of a Tik Tok ban, and holy crow, thanks for tagging me!
