Another great episode. I appreciate that you're introducing me to new people. I get that he's well-known, but he's new to me. I appreciate his devotion to figuring out the truth regardless of where he might find it or where his investigations might lead. We need more reporting like that.

Some audio issues I think software turning off when noone is speaking for a split second. Other than that, interesting convo!

Fellow dramat*rd here from way back! Love this and love substack. The “long form post” format on this platform has been immensely helpful (and entertaining!). Great work!

Listening to this with my family on the way back from the beach, ready to turn the volume dial down the moment we get too far into furry culture.

Also I am posting from Dairy Queen. My posting addiction doesn’t extend to driving.

Update: I had figured Trace’s name (I confess, I can’t think of him as anything other than Trace) came from Xenocide but it was still interesting to hear him tell the story. I’m sure it’s an old wound but I can’t imagine it was easy to leave everything you had believed in when you were a child. Somewhat the opposite path I took with belief, but I appreciate you being honest about your struggles to make sense of it and the emotional impact with your family.

On the putting your attention in places where you know it isn’t productive, and it seems like our society as a whole has attention epilepsy… one day I’ll get you truly Pilled on Trust Assembly stuff, Trace. I know I sound like a crazy person (and to be fair, I am for sure a bit nutty) but if I am crazy it’s in the way that Mel Gibson is crazy but still understands story structure.

I think I would describe this episode as PG-13?

This is super cool.

I think I personally originally signed up for substack for Matt Taibbi back when he first joined, but I'm also a fan of Trace and BAR-pod + many others who I've discovered on here.

I agree with the kind of idea that this platform was able to succeed because it filled in important gaps in the landscape. But instead of sort of upping their game, you saw a lot of attacks from institutional media. Kind of trying to smear substack as a place for undesirables, or whatever.

Kudos to you for weathering that storm and sort of sticking to your ideas of what the platform should be. It would have been easy to cave, but I think when you do you sort of .. agree to engage in a game where the opponent sets the rules and there is no end in sight.

I think it's much better to just to refuse to engage in that discourse. Certainly there are tough questions you'll have to answer, but it's much better to do that following your own compass than having it dictated to you by hostile outside forces. That's my opinion, anyways.

Anywho, good interview, good stuff. Keep up the good work, everyone.

ps to add: your universal constructor coding project seems cool, I'm gonna check it out
